When the rain moved out, the sun came out, the wind laid and the humidity skyrocketed at the Mt. Vernon Girls Cross Country team stepped to the line along with 254 other girls on Saturday. The Dennis Bays Invitational is always historical as it is run at Angel Mounds, but this year was even more historical as the field exploded to include a total of 37 schools. The meet was won by Bloomington South with 72 points. They edged out their rival Columbus North by a single point. Tell City finished 3rd with 148. To put the amount of competition into perspective, the rest of the top 10 in order were: Edgewood, Barr-Reeve, Bloomington North, Castle, South Knox, Evansville Memorial and Bedford North Lawrence. The Lady 'Cats were down two runners due to illness and injury. However, despite the heat, humidity and mud, the Mt. Vernon Wildcats were focused on competing within themselves and they did not dissapoint! Junior Brynn Davis battled her way to the top of the leaderboard for MV for her first team finish of the season. Angel Mounds is typically a slower course all season long without heat and mud, as it is a difficult course to race. Despite that, Davis' time (25:29.9) put her across the finish line in the top half of all competitors in 122nd place. Junior Krissy Bazan ran a competitive race as she led MV for over 2 miles. Her time of 25:56.0 was about 10 seconds faster than a year ago and put her over the line in 131. Senior Ashley Lilleston, ran third for MV in 26:13.8 (141). Her freshman training partner, Makayla Schneider was only 8 seconds behind her as she crossed in 26:21.3 (144). Senior Destin Gentry rounded out the 'Cats' scoring as sheposted a season best, and personal best of 28:40.8 in 191st place. The MVHS girls will also compete in the Alan Hopewell Classic on Thursday at Gibson Southern. We are excited to see them back on a fast course in decent "running weather" as they continue to build confidence and cut times. Great work, Ladies!
