FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Mt. Vernon High School Welcomes Laura Newcomb as New Head Volleyball Coach Mt. Vernon, IN – May 29, 2024 – Mt. Vernon High School is proud to announce the appointment of Laura Newcomb as the new Head Volleyball Coach. Newcomb, a distinguished former volleyball and softball player from Bettendorf, IA, brings a wealth of experience to the Wildcats. Laura Newcomb's athletic journey began in Bettendorf, IA, where she excelled in multiple sports at Bettendorf High School. As a softball player, she was recognized as an all-conference honorable mention in 2004, a second-team all-conference player in 2005, and a first-team all-conference player in 2006. She was also named to the All-Tournament Team in 2006 and served as team captain in 2005 and 2006. In volleyball, Newcomb earned all-conference honorable mention in 2007 and was team captain in 2005. Additionally, she participated in high school track in 2006. Newcomb continued her athletic career in college, where she played varsity softball and was a four-year varsity starter in volleyball. Her exceptional performance as a middle hitter earned her numerous accolades, including the Russell Landis Award for Female Freshman Athlete of the Year, first-team all-conference honors in 2008 and 2009, and MVP of the first-team all-conference in 2009. She graduated as the all-time kills leader and was recognized as an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second-team member in 2009. While in Iowa, she served as a Travel/USA Volleyball Coach at the high school level from 2010 to 2013, a Varsity Softball Assistant Coach at Bettendorf High School in 2009 and 2010, and provided private volleyball lessons from 2010 to 2014. Additionally, she coached volleyball and softball camps at Bettendorf High School from 2006 to 2016. Most recently, Newcomb joined Mt. Vernon High School as the Varsity Softball Assistant Coach in 2023 and has been serving in this position for the 2024 season. Laura Newcomb's extensive coaching experience, combined with her professional background as a Doctor of Physical Therapy, positions her uniquely to enhance the volleyball program at Mt. Vernon High School. She has been actively involved with the school's student-athletes, volunteering in the weight room to connect with them and to use her skills in injury prevention and strength enhancement. The Mt. Vernon Athletic Department is excited to welcome Laura Newcomb as our new Head Volleyball Coach. Her outstanding background along with her commitment to student-athlete development, makes her the perfect fit for the Mt. Vernon Volleyball program. Coach Laura Newcomb will have a positive impact and the Wildcats volleyball program will continue to achieve great success and foster a positive environment for all student-athletes.
