The Mt. Vernon boys' soccer team hosted the South Spencer Rebels in their first home game of the season Thursday evening. Mt. Vernon took control of the game from the beginning, focusing on moving the ball and maintaining possessions. The hard work paid off when freshman Zane Johnson sent a pass to senior James Basden who buried a left footed shot past the Rebel keeper to score the Wildcats' first goal of the season. Just minutes later Basden scored another goal off of a free kick. Unfortunately the Rebels responded mere seconds later with a goal of their own. After the lapse, Mt. Vernon regained control and maintained it throughout the rest of the half. In the second half the Wildcat offense regained their control and possession. Seniors Kyle Lindenschmidt and Hayden Deckard had several scoring opportunities and helped Mt. Vernon control the game. The Wildcat defense kept South Spencer in check all night. Juniors Mason Higginson and Izaiah Gonzalez, sophomore Whitaker Hartman and freshman CJ Gentry locked down the Rebels. The also helped the Wildcat offense by providing support throughout the night. Senior Max Hamrick was solid in the goal making three saves. The Wildcats have a busy weekend coming up playing in the River City Classic with one game Friday night and two more on Saturday.
