Boys Soccer Gets Revenge on Chargers

In a rematch of Saturday's game the Mt. Vernon boys' soccer game got revenge on the Pike Central Chargers. The Chargers took the first contest Saturday 4-0, but Mt. Vernon didn't let that stop them on Monday night. The Wildcats took control of the game from the opening kickoff and controlled the game, much like the start of Saturday's contest. The difference between the two games is that Mt. Vernon continued the pressure past the opening minutes. It took nearly the whole first half, but the Cats finally broke through when senior Hayden Deckard scored his first career goal off an assist from fellow senior Kyle Lindenschmidt. The Wildcats had a let down to open the second half when the Chargers scored in the opening minute. Mt. Vernon could have hung their head and given up, but the maintained their composure and intensity and stuck with their game plan. The game remained tied for much of the second half until Lindenschmidt connected with senior James Basden who scored what turned out to be the game winner. The Wildcat defense played a solid game despite missing two regular starters for the majority of the game. Sophomore Isaac Hamilton stepped up big to fill one of the missing spots, as did junior Hunter Watzlavik. Fellow junior Mason Higginson and freshman CJ Gentry also helped set the tone defensively for the Wildcats. Senior Max Hamrick played another strong game in goal for the Cats with 8 saves. The Wildcats moved to 3-3 on the season and 2-1 on the season. They now have a break before returning to action next Wednesday when they host South Knox.
