The Mt. Vernon Wildcats took on the Tell City Marksman on Saturday afternoon to conclude the 1st Annual Mt. Vernon Day of Soccer in which all junior high and high school teams played on the same day at the high school field. Unfortunately the Wildcats fell short. The game was close throughout the first half. Senior James Basden had several shots on goal against the Marksmen, but couldn't quite find the back of the net. The Wildcat defense was solid with juniors Hunter Watzlavik and Izaiah Gonzalez anchoring it. At halftime the score was tied 0-0. In the second half Tell City set the pace early and bombarded the Wildcat defense with shots. Thankfully senior Max Hamrick made several big saves to keep Tell City off the board. Finally the Marksmen made a breakthrough to take the 1-0 lead. Later in the half Tell City put the game out of reach with a penalty kick on a handball to come to the final score of 2-0. The loss drops the Wildcats to 3-5 on the season. The return to action on Thursday at home against Gibson Southern.
