Boys Soccer Season Comes to a Close

The Mt. Vernon boys soccer team saw their season draw to a close on Wednesday night with a sectional semifinal defeat at the hands of the fourth ranked Heritage Hills Patriots. Despite being the underdog going into the match, the Wildcats were undaunted. The Cats took control of the ball in the opening minutes and had a few good opportunities on offense, but as has been the case all season, they just couldn't finish them and get the ball in the back of the net. The Wildcat defense was rock solid for most of the first half, giving up just one goal. The second half started off with plenty of drama. Mt. Vernon was called for a hand ball in the box in the opening minute and the Patriots were awarded a penalty kick. Senior keeper Max Hamrick came up with a big time save to keep the Cats in the game, but the ball was deflected out of bounds and Heritage Hills ended up with a corner kick. The Patriots scored off the ensuing kick, but the goal was called off due to a foul. Mt. Vernon continued to push through but just couldn't get a goal. Heritage Hills eventually added to their lead off of a corner kick, before adding two more late goals to take the game 4-0. This was the final game in the careers of James Basden, Hayden Deckard, Kyle Lindenschmidt and Max Hamrick.
