Sarah MacGregor Ward to Be Inducted into Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame

The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the 23rd Women's induction class to be honored in ceremonies on Saturday, April 26, 2025. Among them is Mt. Vernon High School alumna and former Wildcat, Sarah MacGregor Ward, as part of the prestigious 23rd induction class. A 1926 graduate of Mt. Vernon Senior High School, MacGregor Ward is an exemplary model of dedication and perseverance. During her high school basketball career, she scored an impressive 755 points in her final three seasons and led her team to an outstanding 49-4-1 record. Known by the nickname "Can't Miss Sally," she was a key figure in the Wildcats' storied history of basketball excellence. The Wildcats were consistently among the top teams in the state during this era, with Mt. Vernon Senior High School establishing a proud tradition of athletic success. MacGregor Ward’s induction into the Hall of Fame further cements her legacy as one of the school’s all-time greats and highlights Mt. Vernon’s enduring basketball tradition. Her recognition is a testament to her exceptional contributions to the sport and the lasting impact of her athletic achievements. From the Hall of Fame Website: Honoree: The late Sarah (MacGregor) Ward, a 1926 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School in Posey County. Recognition: Considered one of the greatest players in the early years of southern Indiana girls’ basketball. Physical Stats: 5-foot-3, 108 pounds. Career Highlights: Scored 755 points in her final three high school years. Led her team to a 49-4-1 record under coach Homer B. Allgood. Senior Year (1925-26): Nicknamed “Can't Miss Sally.” Scored 359 points, averaging 18.9 points per game. Led the team to an 18-1 record and an eight-team tournament championship in Huntingburg, regarded as the state championship. Recorded a season-high 56 points in a 74-2 win over Evansville Memorial on February 20, 1926, with 27 field goals and two free throws. Junior Year (1924-25): Scored 329 points, averaging 18.3 points per game. Helped her team achieve an 18-0 record, also regarded as a state championship. Outscored opponents single-handedly, with her average (18.3 PPG) exceeding the opponents’ team average (14.3 PPG). In addition to her induction, Mt. Vernon High School has donated the "Loving Cup Trophies" to the new women's wing of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
