Boys Soccer Takes Down Rebels

The Mt. Vernon boys' soccer team earned their first victory of the season on Thursday night by taking down the South Spencer Rebels. Senior Mason Higginson got the Cats on the board early with his second goal of the young season when he dribbled through the Rebel defense and buried a shot. South Spencer quickly found a whole in the Wildcat defense and tied the game up within a few minutes. After the early scoring, the two teams spent the rest of the first half looking to pull ahead, but neither team was able to. After halftime sophomore Brock McNeese put the Cats ahead for good with another early goal, his first of the year. The Wildcat defense locked in after that and junior goalie Maddox Henson came up with some big saves to maintain the lead. Higginson added a second goal later in the half to give Mt. Vernon more of a cushion. Junior Mitchell Ragsdale picked up his first assist of the season on Higginson's goal. The final score was 3-1, drawing the Wildcats back to .500 at 1-1 on the season. They return to the field on Friday night for a busy week playing in the River City Classic tournament at EVSC Fields. They take on the Boonville Pioneers Friday night at 5:30 and then Evansville Day School and Pike Central on Saturday at 9:00 and 12:30.
