Boys Soccer Falls in Rematch

Just two days after falling to Pike Central in the River City Classic the Mt. Vernon boys' soccer team was scheduled for a rematch with the Chargers. Saturday's loss was much closer than the 3-1 score would indicate so the team was ready for revenge. The Wildcats spent much of the first half moving ball with efficiency and playing strong defense. Unfortunately, like on Saturday, despite controlling the pace and tempo the Cats gave up an unlucky goal on a long range shot from the Chargers that barely scooted under the crossbar and out of the reach of goalie Maddux Henson. The Wildcats kept plugging away, and almost found the equalizer right before the halftime whistle with a shot from senior Lorenzo Leandri. In the second half the Wildcat offense stepped up their game and continued to pass the ball around with ease, but could not break through a solid Pike Central defense. Despite many attacks deep into the Charger territory the Cats were kept off the board. Pike Central tacked on a late goal on a deflection off of a Mt. Vernon defender to clinch the 2-0 victory. After playing six games in the opening ten days of the season, and five in the past five days, the Cats will take a well deserved break before returning to action next Wednesday when they travel to South Knox for a non-conference game.
