The Mt. Vernon boys' soccer team traveled to Vincennes on Wednesday night for a non-conference game against the South Knox Spartans. The game got off to a slow start with the Spartans controlling the pace and getting off several shots early, but Mt. Vernon junior goalie Maddux Henson did a good job keeping the ball out of the net. The score stayed knotted at 0 for the first twenty minutes before South Knox finally got a clean shot off from a miscleared ball in the back. The goal was a bit of a wake of call for the Wildcats who stepped up their intensity after giving up the goal. With mere seconds left in the first half South Knox was awarded a corner kick and the capitalized to take a 2-0 lead into half. After halftime the Wildcats again picked up the intensity and shut off the Spartan offense who had registered 10 shots in the first half. Unfortunately the South Knox defense did the same to the Cats. Despite controlling the pace of the game for much of the second half, the Wildcats couldn't break through the Spartan backline. With about 20 minutes remaining the Cats made some tactical changes to apply more pressure on the Spartan defense. Finally their effort was rewarded when sophomore CJ Gentry scored a goal to draw Mt. Vernon to within one with only two and a half minutes remaining. This proved to be too little too late as Mt. Vernon couldn't find the equalizer and fell 2-1. The Cat's travel to Tell City on Saturday to take on the Marksmen in a conference battle at 4:00.
