Mt. Vernon High School Athletics is excited to announce the hiring of Matthew Vaught as the new Head Coach of the Wildcats Boys and Girls Swimming & Diving programs and Aquatics Director. While Coach Vaught is already a familiar face to many through his leadership with the Mt. Vernon Swim Team, we are thrilled to officially welcome him to the Wildcat coaching staff in this expanded role. Coach Vaught brings both experience and passion to Mt. Vernon Aquatics. A graduate of F.J. Reitz High School, he has been involved in competitive swimming since the age of six. What began as a childhood love for the water quickly developed into a lifelong passion, one that continues today as he still competes with the same swim club where he first entered the pool nearly two decades ago. During his high school career, Vaught earned Academic All-City and Academic All-State honors, served as a team captain, and was selected as his team's Boys MVP. Those experiences helped shape the leadership style he now brings to the pool deck. For the past four years, Coach Vaught has been an integral part of the Mt. Vernon Swim Team, helping develop young swimmers while building strong relationships with athletes and families throughout the community. Prior to joining Mt. Vernon, he spent ten years coaching the Helfrich Swim Team, giving him extensive experience teaching athletes of all ages and skill levels. "Despite participating in multiple sports growing up, swimming has always been my favorite," said Vaught. "I love that swimming challenges athletes to improve themselves while also supporting and encouraging their teammates. Having coaches and teammates who helped me grow as both a swimmer and a person inspired me to pursue a career in aquatics, and I hope to provide Mt. Vernon students with that same experience." Coach Vaught's philosophy centers on developing the whole athlete. "My goal is to provide swimmers with the tools to succeed both in and out of the pool," he said. "I want to build a culture that values communication, trust, and hard work—not only between coaches and athletes, but within the team and throughout our community." As Aquatics Director, Coach Vaught will also play an important role in strengthening the connection between Mt. Vernon's youth, club, and high school swimming programs, helping create a unified pathway for swimmers to develop from their earliest experiences in the water through graduation. "I have had an amazing experience representing Mt. Vernon's club team for the last four years," Vaught added. "With the connections I have made with Mt. Vernon's swim families, I am grateful to now also represent Mt. Vernon High School and excited to join the Wildcat family." Athletic Director Leigh Ann Latshaw believes Coach Vaught's familiarity with the community and commitment to student-athlete development make him an outstanding fit for the program. "Matthew has already invested himself in our swimmers and our families through the club program," said Latshaw. "He understands the importance of relationships, communication, and building a positive culture. We are excited for him to lead both our high school program and our overall aquatics efforts as we continue to grow opportunities for student-athletes in and out of the pool." Please join Mt. Vernon Athletics in welcoming Coach Matthew Vaught to his new role as Head Swimming & Diving Coach and Aquatics Director. The future of Wildcat Aquatics is in great hands, and we look forward to watching the program continue to grow under his leadership. For questions about Mt.
